In January 1995, Súðavík, a small fishing village situated in the Westfjords region of Iceland, became the scene of a devastating avalanche. The village, characterized by its picturesque landscape and close-knit community, was struck unexpectedly by heavy snowfall in the days leading up to the event. As the snow accumulated, the risk of avalanche formation increased significantly. On that fateful day, a massive avalanche descended from the steep mountains surrounding the village, burying homes and residents alike. The avalanche destroyed 25 houses, transforming the village into a scene of destruction and despair.

Emergency services mobilized quickly, attempting to rescue those trapped under the snow. However, the adverse weather conditions, coupled with the debris, complicated rescue efforts. Of the 26 individuals trapped, 14 tragically lost their lives while the remaining were rescued. The event sent shockwaves through the close community, which had to grapple with the loss and the impact on their daily lives.
