On December 15, 2017, a 6.5Mw earthquake struck Tasikmalaya, a city in West Java, Indonesia. The quake occurred during the evening, startling residents and leading to immediate evacuations in some areas. Reports indicated that several buildings suffered damage, including homes and businesses, which led to a power outage in parts of the city. The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reported that the seismic event took place at a depth of approximately 107 kilometers, which helped minimize the risk of a tsunami, a concern often associated with earthquakes in coastal areas. However, the depth did not mitigate the extensive damage caused at the surface level.In the aftermath, emergency response teams were deployed to assess the damage and provide assistance to those affected. Hospitals were strained with an influx of patients requiring medical attention due to injuries sustained during the quake. Local and national government agencies collaborated to deliver aid, including food and temporary shelters for displaced families. This earthquake highlighted the necessity for Indonesia, an archipelago situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, to enhance its disaster preparedness and response strategies in order to better protect its population from similar occurrences in the future.
