Following the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, the federation consisted of six emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al-Quwain, and Fujairah. Ras Al Khaimah, however, held back from joining the federation initially due to various political and economic concerns. Over time, it became evident that unity among the emirates was essential for regional stability, economic growth, and enhanced security against external threats. Consequently, negotiations began to integrate Ras Al Khaimah into the UAE federation. On 2 October 1972, Ras Al Khaimah officially became the seventh emirate of the United Arab Emirates, represented by its ruler, Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, who signed the accession document. This accession was celebrated across the emirates as it symbolized the strengthening of ties between the emirates and the commitment to a united future. The emirate's incorporation into the federation contributed significantly to the country's overall economic development and social integration.

As a coastal emirate, Ras Al Khaimah brought valuable natural resources such as oil and minerals into the federation, which were critical for the UAE’s growth. The emirate’s geographical diversity and strategic location were also advantageous, enhancing the UAE's positioning in both regional and international affairs. Following its accession, Ras Al Khaimah embarked on several developmental projects that aligned with the greater goals of the UAE, bringing modernization and infrastructure improvements while still holding onto cultural traditions.
