In the early 20th century, the Dutch colonial presence in the East Indies was characterized by both economic exploitation and social tensions. Northern Sumatra, rich in resources and strategic importance, was a focal point of resistance against colonial rule. General G.C.E. van Daalen, commanding the Marechaussee regiment, was instructed to suppress any uprisings that threatened Dutch interests in the region. On August 2, 1904, the campaign was initiated, and the military operations swiftly escalated into a series of confrontations with local populations.
