Breonna Taylor was a 26-year-old African American woman who worked as an emergency medical technician in Louisville, Kentucky. In the early hours of March 13, 2020, Louisville Metro Police officers executed a no-knock warrant at her apartment as part of a narcotics investigation. The warrant was linked to a suspect who did not live at her location. As police forcibly entered the apartment, Taylor and her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, believed they were being intruded upon by intruders and alleged self-defense. Walker fired a shot, striking one officer, which prompted police to return fire in a barrage of bullets that struck Taylor multiple times, resulting in her death.The circumstances surrounding her death soon became a flashpoint for ongoing concerns about racial injustice, police practices, and the implications of no-knock warrants.
