In Gërdec, a village in Albania, a catastrophic incident unfolded when stockpiles of obsolete ammunition exploded at a former military depot. The site was known for storing outdated military munitions, which had been neglected and poorly managed. Even though the ammunition stockpiles were deemed obsolete, a group of individuals engaged in unauthorized activities of dismantling and disposing of these munitions, which posed a grave danger to the local populace. As the operation unfolded, a series of explosions occurred, leading to widespread devastation in the surrounding area. Tragically, 26 people lost their lives, and many more were severely injured as a result of the blasts.The explosions not only resulted in casualties but also caused significant destruction to infrastructure, homes, and the environment. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but the scale of the disaster made rescue efforts challenging. Investigations into the incident revealed severe lapses in safety protocols and regulation concerning the handling of military surplus and obsolete weapons. This incident prompted officials to revisit the policies surrounding the management of such materials, as well as raising awareness about the risks involved with the previously unmonitored storage conditions of the ammunition depot.
