Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople played a significant role during a tumultuous period within the Ottoman Empire. The Greek War of Independence erupted in 1821, creating severe tensions between the Greek population and the Ottoman authorities. As a religious leader, Gregory V was perceived as a supporter of the Greek independence movement, which prompted the Ottoman government to take drastic actions to maintain control over its territories.
