Pánfilo de Narváez’s expedition was a notable attempt at exploration and colonization, marking one of the early Spanish endeavors in what is now the southeastern United States. Commissioned by the Spanish crown, Narváez set sail from Spain with an entourage of around 600 men, laden with hopes of riches and fame in uncharted territories. Aiming to replicate the success of earlier expeditions, this journey was intended not only for discovery but also to rival the lucrative conquests of the Aztecs and Incas seen in earlier years. Upon landing in Florida, the crew encountered resistance from local Native American tribes, who were both wary and hostile to the newcomers lurking in their lands. The challenges faced by Narváez and his men grew increasingly dire as supplies dwindled, and attempts at establishing settlements were met with fierce opposition.
