The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve is located in the Mexican state of Querétaro and is recognized as one of the most biologically diverse regions in the country. Spanning an impressive 1.5 million acres, it features mountains, temperate forests, subtropical wetlands, and dry forests, making it a sanctuary for countless plant and animal species, some of which are endemic to the region. The initiative to establish this reserve was led by local communities, particularly by an environmental NGO known as Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, founded in the late 1980s. Their long-standing commitment to environmental education, restoration, and sustainable practices laid the groundwork for this significant achievement. Grassroots movements played a critical role in gathering support for conservation, emphasizing the need for local stewardship of the land. The establishment of the biosphere reserve reflects a successful collaboration between the government, NGOs, and local residents, which made it possible to formalize conservation efforts and promote sustainable land use practices. Local villagers began to engage in ecotourism, sustainable farming, and habitat restoration efforts, which not only contributed to conservation but also improved community livelihoods.
