She was accused of witchcraft amid a growing climate of fear fueled by religious fervor, social tensions, and local rivalries. The Salem witch trials began in the spring of 1692 when several young girls in Salem Village began exhibiting mysterious fits and accusing local women of witchcraft. Bishop, who had been previously accused of witchcraft in the late 1670s, found herself back in the spotlight when the accusers claimed her specter was tormenting them.
