In July, a metal detectorist named Terry Herbert found a remarkable cache of over 1,500 items made from gold and silver near Hammerwich, a village close to Lichfield in Staffordshire. This extraordinary hoard represents the largest collection of Anglo-Saxon gold ever discovered in Britain and showcases the wealth and artistry of that era. Among the items found were intricate gold jewelry, beautifully crafted decorative pieces, and several weapons, all believed to date between the 6th and 8th centuries, a crucial period in the formation of England as we know it.

The discovery was made on farmland belonging to a local farmer and created immediate excitement within the archaeological community. Following the initial find, the local coroner declared it a treasure under the Treasure Act of 1996, which allowed for a thorough archaeological investigation to take place.
