On the morning of August 10, 2019, Philip Manshaus, a 21-year-old Norwegian, first fatally shot his 17-year-old stepsister at their home in Bærum, Norway. Following this initial act of violence, he armed himself with firearms and made his way to the Al-Noor Islamic Centre, a mosque located in the suburb of Bærum. Manshaus had expressed far-right extremist views, and his intention was to carry out a mass shooting aimed at the Muslim community. Upon entering the mosque, he began to threaten and intimidate worshippers who were present for prayers. However, the rapid response of the mosque attendees, who bravely confronted and restrained him, prevented a potential massacre. Though Manshaus was armed and prepared to cause significant harm, his plan was thwarted before he could enact it fully, leading to his arrest by local police shortly afterwards.

Following his arrest, authorities uncovered evidence of Manshaus's extremist ideology, including a manifesto inspired by other far-right extremists. The incident sparked widespread condemnation and highlighted the dangers of far-right extremism in Norway and beyond. It raised concerns about the safety of minority communities and prompted calls for increased security measures in places of worship.
