Leon Trotsky, a leading figure in the early Bolshevik movement and a key player in the Russian Revolution, was living in Mexico City under the protection of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo after being exiled for his opposition to Stalin's regime. On August 20, Ramón Mercader, an assassin sent by Stalin’s agents, gained access to Trotsky's home by pretending to be a supporter. Mercader had hidden a ice axe, which he used to strike Trotsky in the head, critically injuring him. As Trotsky lay wounded, he reportedly tried to defend himself, demonstrating his indomitable spirit. The brutal attack shocked the world and exemplified the lengths to which Stalin's regime would go to eliminate dissent. Trotsky was rushed to the hospital but tragically died from his injuries on August 21, the day after the attack.
