This catastrophic event devastated the city, demolishing almost 300 buildings, including homes and businesses. As local residents struggled to recover, Dr. William W. Mayo and his sons, influenced by the immense suffering and needs of the injured, perceived an opportunity amid the devastation. Faced with the need for advanced medical care and management of the growing population, they began to lay the groundwork for a hospital that would prioritize patient care and expertise.
