This battle occurred as Portugal sought to expand its influence and territories in the east, particularly in the Indian Ocean and the Middle East, in direct competition with the Ottoman Empire, which had been consolidating its power across North Africa and into Europe. On August 28, 1542, a fierce engagement unfolded at Wofla, situated in present-day Ethiopia.
