During the first coho salmon sport fishing season, fishermen on Lake Michigan faced an unexpected meteorological crisis when a squall suddenly emerged. With the anticipation of a successful season ahead, anglers were out in numbers, eager to catch the newly introduced coho salmon. However, as dark clouds rolled in and winds escalated, the conditions on the water rapidly deteriorated. The squall unleashed powerful winds, creating treacherous waves that overwhelmed many boats.

In this disaster, more than 150 boats capsized, with the violence of the squall striking hard and fast. Fishermen and their families tragically found themselves in peril as the waters became chaotic. Rescuers and local authorities were immediately mobilized to assist those in distress. Despite the quick response, the fatalities were devastating—seven individuals lost their lives, and an additional 46 people were injured, marking a grim day in the history of recreational fishing on the lake.
