Los Angeles was founded by a group of 44 Spanish settlers, including ranchers, soldiers, and their families, who arrived in the area on September 4, 1781. They established the settlement known as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora La Reina de los Ángeles, which translates to 'The Village of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels.'
