In early September 2022, the Ukrainian armed forces commenced a counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region, aiming to reclaim territories occupied by Russian forces since the onset of the Russo-Ukrainian War in 2022. Following a period of stalemate, Ukrainian military planners devised a strategy that capitalized on intelligence, moral low ground among the Russian troops, and the momentum of reinvigorated training and support from Western allies. Russia had initially concentrated its military efforts in other areas, particularly in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, creating an opportunity for Ukraine to exploit vulnerabilities in the north.
