Born in 1165 in Castile, Berengaria married Richard I of England in 1191 during the Third Crusade. The marriage was politically motivated to strengthen ties between England and Spain. Berengaria did not produce any children with Richard, largely due to their separation as he returned to England after the crusade. Following Richard's death in 1199, Berengaria lived in England for a period but ultimately returned to Castile. She exerted influence in matters of succession and politics during her lifetime.
