An accomplished basketball player and coach, Williams played college basketball at the University of Maryland. In the NBA, he played primarily for the New Jersey Nets and the Portland Trail Blazers. Williams was a vital part of the Trail Blazers roster that reached the NBA Finals in 1990. He was selected as an NBA All-Star twice and received the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 1982. Following his playing career, he transitioned to coaching, serving as an assistant coach in several organizations.
