Reigned as the final Sultan of Zanzibar from 1963 until the revolution in 1964 which led to the end of the sultanate. The sultanate was a major center for trade and cultural exchange in East Africa. After the revolution, sought refuge in England where he lived until his death. His reign marked the end of an era in Zanzibari history, transitioning the archipelago from a monarchy to a republic.
