First to ascend Lhotse via the South Face and K2 via the route through the never before attempted southeast face. Known for rapid ascents and innovative climbing techniques. Contributed greatly to high-altitude climbing culture and techniques during the late 20th century. Passed away in an avalanche while attempting to climb the South Face of Lhotse in 1989.
