Red Cloud participated in various conflicts against the United States, most notably the Red Cloud's War (1866-1868). The war culminated in the Treaty of Fort Laramie, which recognized Lakota ownership of the Black Hills. Red Cloud became the only Native American to defeat the U.S. Army in a war and secure a major treaty. Later in life, he engaged in efforts for peace and the preservation of his people's culture.
