A Spanish priest and missionary, this individual played a crucial role in establishing missions in California during the 18th century. Arriving in the New World in 1749, he dedicated himself to the spread of Christianity among the Indigenous peoples. Throughout his life, he founded nine missions, including Mission San Diego de Alcalá and Mission San Juan Capistrano. In 1988, he was beatified by the Roman Catholic Church and later canonized in 2015.
