Baird served as a barrister and held the position of Queen's Counsel. In 2001, elected as the Member of Parliament for Redcar, she represented the Labour Party until 2010. Baird also served as the Solicitor General from 2007 to 2010, contributing to legal reforms in the United Kingdom. Throughout her career, she advocated for women's rights and legal aid.
