Born into the royal family during the Later Tang dynasty, Wang Zongji held the title of prince. After the fall of the Tang dynasty, he claimed the title of emperor in opposition to the new rulers. His reign was characterized by attempts to restore the previous dynasty’s rule. Despite efforts to gather support and reclaim the throne, Zongji's challenge was met with military resistance and political difficulties. Ultimately, his reign as pretender was short-lived, and he was unable to achieve his goal of ruling.
