The attacks were part of a larger strategy to eliminate the threat posed by rebel groups led by Fidel Castro, who aimed to overthrow Batista's regime. The air raids destroyed sections of the city, targeting suspected revolutionary strongholds and inflicting civilian casualties. This violent response marked a significant escalation in the conflict and further solidified the resolve of Castro’s forces.
