The quake, lasting approximately 15 seconds, was centered near Loma Prieta Peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains, leading to significant structural damage in cities like San Francisco, Oakland, and Santa Cruz. A notorious moment during the quake was the collapse of a section of the Bay Bridge. Emergency services responded swiftly, but the event tragically resulted in 63 fatalities and thousands of injuries.
