Martin Luther's Defiance Against Papal Authority

Outside the Elster Gate in Wittenberg, Martin Luther infamously burned his copy of the papal bull Exsurge Domine. The papal bull, issued by Pope Leo X, condemned Luther's teachings and heretical acts. By publicly destroying this document, Luther symbolized his rejection of papal authority. He asserted the importance of scripture over church traditions and sought to reform the church.
