The fighting began on December 8, 1941, following the attack on Pearl Harbor, as Japanese forces aimed to extend their control over key strategic locations in the Pacific. American troops stationed on Wake Island, supported by local defense forces, put up a fierce resistance. However, the Japanese outnumbered the defenders, leading to the eventual capture of the island.
