First Observance of Decoration Day Proclaimed

Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day, was first observed to honor fallen soldiers. A proclamation by John A. Logan, head of the Grand Army of the Republic, called for the decoration of graves of Union soldiers who died during the Civil War. This day was chosen for its significance in the spring season, symbolizing renewal and remembrance of the sacrifices made in battle.
