The Tower Subway, the world's first underground tube railway, was opened in London. Completed in 1870, this remarkable engineering feat allowed trains to travel beneath the River Thames, connecting the Tower of London with Southwark. The project was driven by the need for a more efficient means of transportation across the river, reducing congestion on the surface streets.
