O'Konski, survived the blast, escaping the horrific event that claimed many lives. The cause of the explosion was attributed to the ignition of gas, leading to a devastating fire that enveloped the mine and trapped the workers inside. Rescue efforts began immediately, but the extent of the disaster became apparent as the casualty reports mounted.
