Edward Whymper led the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn, reaching its peak on July 14, 1865. Whymper's party consisted of several experienced climbers, and the successful ascent marked a significant achievement in mountaineering. However, tragedy struck during their descent when four members of the party fell to their deaths, casting a shadow over the achievement.
