He was a key figure in the Investiture Controversy, which was a conflict between the papacy and secular rulers over the appointment of bishops and church officials. His papacy emphasized clerical reform and the independence of the Church from secular influence. Gregory issued the Dictatus Papae, which outlined the powers of the pope, including the ability to depose emperors. After a series of conflicts with German Emperor Henry IV, he was eventually exiled but continued to assert papal authority until his death.
