Penda of Mercia

Engaged in numerous battles against rival kingdoms, he notably fought against Northumbria, particularly at the Battle of Hatfield Chase in 633 and the Battle of Winwaed in 654. His reign marked a period of Mercian dominance in British politics and military affairs. Penda’s leadership contributed to Mercia becoming one of the most powerful kingdoms in England during the 7th century. He was a strong proponent of paganism in a time when Christianity was spreading across England.
